Ericsson Launches Cognitive Labs to Pioneer the Future of Telecoms AI

Ericsson has unveiled its groundbreaking initiative, Cognitive Labs, a virtual research hub dedicated to pushing the boundaries of Artificial Intelligence in the telecommunications sector. This initiative underscores Ericsson’s commitment to leading AI innovation and its potential to revolutionise not just telecoms, but other industries like healthcare.

Cognitive Labs will focus on cutting-edge AI technologies, including Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), Active Learning, and Large-Scale Language Models (LLMs), which Ericsson believes are crucial for the next generation of mobile communications. The company also emphasises the importance of extending AI’s transformative power to other sectors.

“Cognitive Labs represents our commitment to lead innovation in AI and make a significant contribution to the open source community,” says Jean-Christophe Laneri, Head of Cognitive Network Solutions at Ericsson. “Our mission is to create world-class research that can benefit the academic community and enhance our products to better serve our customers.”  

A Triad of AI Research Labs:

Cognitive Labs is structured around three specialised research arms:

GAI Lab (Geometric Artificial Intelligence Lab):

This lab delves into Geometric AI, focusing on explainability in geometric learning, graph generation, and temporal GNNs. Ericsson anticipates breakthroughs in areas like drug discovery, potentially leading to the development of more effective pharmaceuticals.

MLR Lab (Machine Learning and Reasoning Lab):

This lab concentrates on training model optimisation and reinforcement learning, aiming to develop energy-efficient training methods for AI models and create digital twins that simulate real-world scenarios. This focus aligns with sustainable AI development by reducing time and energy consumption.

FAI Lab (Fundamental Artificial Intelligence Lab):

This lab explores foundational AI models, including Large-Scale Language Models, to shape the future of AI in telecoms. Its primary goal is to automate processes and enhance technological efficiencies within the industry.

This specialised structure allows Ericsson to address diverse challenges while maintaining a unified focus on leveraging AI for a wide range of applications.

A core principle of Cognitive Labs is open collaboration. Ericsson is committed to engaging with the open-source community to accelerate the development of AI technologies for broader societal benefit. The initiative will also prioritise the creation of reusable AI libraries, empowering researchers and industry professionals across various fields, from healthcare to digital communications.

Ericsson aims to attract leading global researchers and data scientists to further solidify its position as a leader in AI innovation. Spain has emerged as a key hub for Cognitive Labs, with Ericsson Spain playing a vital role through its R&D activities in Madrid and Málaga. A new partnership with Universidad Pontificia Comillas, specifically its School of Engineering (Comillas ICAI), will further accelerate AI research through joint publications and open-source contributions. This collaboration will bring together Ericsson’s top engineers and data scientists with the university’s research teams to drive innovation at both national and European levels.

“The close collaboration between top data scientists and engineers from Ericsson and ICAI’s teams will enable Ericsson Spain to lead innovation at the national and European levels, strengthening its position as a benchmark in technology and development,” Ericsson states.  

This partnership emphasises Ericsson’s dedication to the Cognitive Labs initiative and its commitment to developing Spain’s expertise in cutting-edge AI. Through these focused R&D efforts, Ericsson aims to solidify its position as a leading innovator in telecoms and beyond.
